Heading into the Vault, Not to Be Opened Again until 2093!

November 8, 2018–The VNSNY 125th Anniversary Time Capsule is about to be stored away, not to be opened again for 75 years—when VNSNY celebrates its bicentennial in 2093! The time capsule is being placed in the VNSNY Archives at Columbia University in upper Manhattan. Over 100 VNSNY staff members offered dozens of excellent suggestions on what should be included, everything from a VNSNY iPhone to a clinician’s uniform to a VNSNY branded backpack. Unfortunately, due to limited space, we could only put a small number of items into the time capsule. With that in mind, items from 2018 took preference over older items that were suggested. Perhaps the best items that will be sealed away, though, are the VNSNY anniversary banners that hundreds of staff members signed during our 125th anniversary breakfast back on October 25th. “My thanks to everyone at VNSNY who provided such wonderful ideas on what to place in our time capsule,” notes Marki Flannery, VNSNY’s President and CEO.

Happy 125th Birthday to VNSNY and Henry Street Settlement!

September 17, 2018–VNSNY Joins Henry Street for a 125th Anniversary Party on Manhattan’s Lower East Side On Sunday afternoon, September 16th, just a stone’s throw from the building on Henry Street where Lillian Wald founded the Visiting Nurse Service of New York in 1893, VNSNY joined forces with its former sibling, the Henry Street Settlement, to mark their shared 125th anniversary. On a balmy late summer’s day, hundreds of community members came together with staff from the two organizations at the Sol Lain Playground on Manhattan’s Lower East Side to enjoy a range of ethnic cuisines representing the rich diversity of the community, as well as to participate in games, dancing, music, face-painting and other activities. The day’s highlight was the cutting of the official 125th birthday cake by VNSNY President and CEO Marki Flannery and Henry Street’s Executive Director, David Garza. Joining them for the cake-cutting were a number of elected officials, including U.S. Representatives

VNSNY Staff Volunteer to Help Beautify 5 City Playgrounds, All for Our 125th Anniversary

July 18, 2018–Among Lillian Wald’s many accomplishments, she is famous for establishing New York City’s first playground for children. On Saturday, July 14th, in celebration of VNSNY’s 125th anniversary, approximately 80 VNSNY staff members honored her legacy by spending several hours volunteering at one of five playgrounds across the city—braving near-90-degree temperatures to plant flowers, weed garden beds, and scrape and repaint benches, fences and other playground fixtures. “Even though it was hot and humid, everybody had a good time,” says VNSNY Human Resource Specialist Caroline Umhoefer, who organized and assisted with the event together with fellow HR Connect staffers Michelle Antonucci, Lenore Boyd, Jessica Falsetta and Roxanne Gay. Besides giving the playgrounds a facelift, she notes, the volunteers also fielded their share of inquiries from other parkgoers. “People were curious, so it was a good chance to speak with folks outside of VNSNY and explain what we were doing.” In addition to
