Special Feature: Seven VNSNY Nurses From Across VNSNY Share Their Insights!

May 8, 2019–In honor of National Nurses Week, seven nurses working in different parts of VNSNY spoke to Frontline VNSNY about the challenges and rewards of their job. Here’s what they had to say: “I meet patients at their bedside close to discharge, at a time when many are very anxious about going home.”   Michelle Schiffman, Home Care Consultant, VNSNY Home Care “I’m based at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where I work as an intake nurse for VNSNY Home Care. I basically evaluate patients to determine whether they’re appropriate candidates for home care. If they are, I set up their home care services. I used to do bedside nursing at a hospital, and I was initially worried when I started here that I wouldn’t have as much patient contact as before—but I found that I most definitely do have meaningful interaction with patients. I meet them at their bedside close to

The “10 Moments” When Home Healthcare Workers Should Clean Their Hands

May 7, 2019–This past Sunday wasn’t just Cinco de Mayo. It was also World Hand Hygiene Day! For anyone in the health care business, washing hands or using hand sanitizer is one of the single most important things you can do to ensure your own health and the health of your patients. According to the World Health Organization, good hand hygiene can prevent health care-acquired infections caused by microorganisms that can survive for hours on the hands of healthcare providers, if they’re not cleaned properly. At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control notes that some providers practice hand hygiene less than half of the times they should. “Hand hygiene is a simple and effective way to prevent the transmission of dangerous microorganisms,” says VNSNY Infection Prevention Specialist Victoria Adams. “But despite everything we know about how hand hygiene protects patients’ health, studies show that many providers are still not practicing

Say Goodbye to Inconvenience. Say Hello to Easy Access. Say Hello to Workday!

April 10, 2019–This summer, VNSNY will begin rolling out Workday, a new human resources and finance software system for all of us to use! With Workday, you will be able to put in for PTO hours from your phone or tablet when you’re on the go… and you’ll be able to have your HR information organized the way you want it on your own personalized home page—and then be able to check your benefits from wherever you happen to be, 24/7. Why are we bringing Workday to VNSNY? The goal is to make managing our work life easier. We’ve heard from you many times that we use too many systems, including PeopleSoft, Workbrain and Oracle. And we’ve heard that those systems don’t work on our mobile devices, which is quite inconvenient. Plus, all three systems sit on servers in a data center, when one system could sit in the “cloud” and improve
