Amazing! VNSNY Gala Raises a Record $1.32 Million for Our Charitable Care Programs

November 13, 2018–This year’s VNSNY Gala, celebrating VNSNY’s 125th anniversary with the theme, “Enriching Lives: 125 Years and Counting!”, ended up making history in its own right. The event, held on November 8th in the recently renovated Ziegfeld Ballroom, raised a record-breaking $1,320,000 in donations from the nearly 600 people in attendance, shattering the previous mark set four years ago. “All of the Gala’s proceeds will go to support our vital charitable care and community benefit programs,” says Catherine Callaway, Vice President of Marketing and Development. These include a wide range of important safety-net programs such as VNSNY’s Nurse-Family Partnership, Hospice services, and the VNSNY Research Center. For example, money raised from the event will go to create brighter futures for young mothers like Ashley, who, as she says, “was in a bad place” and needed help. Here is Ashley’s story: Proceeds from the Gala will also help enable VNSNY to continue

A Former Army Medic Supports Veterans at the End of Life: Spotlight on Sung Yoon, VNSNY Hospice Veterans Liaison

Frontline VNSNY is reposting it in recognition of Veterans Day 2018. Since this article’s original publication, Sung, who saw active duty in Afghanistan, has been selected for the 2018-2019 cohort of the We Are All New York Fellowship—a year-long leadership development program sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, that connects professionals with fellow leaders and experts in the non-profit, faith, government and community arenas.  For Sung Yoon, VNSNY Hospice’s new Veterans Liaison, the

Heading into the Vault, Not to Be Opened Again until 2093!

November 8, 2018–The VNSNY 125th Anniversary Time Capsule is about to be stored away, not to be opened again for 75 years—when VNSNY celebrates its bicentennial in 2093! The time capsule is being placed in the VNSNY Archives at Columbia University in upper Manhattan. Over 100 VNSNY staff members offered dozens of excellent suggestions on what should be included, everything from a VNSNY iPhone to a clinician’s uniform to a VNSNY branded backpack. Unfortunately, due to limited space, we could only put a small number of items into the time capsule. With that in mind, items from 2018 took preference over older items that were suggested. Perhaps the best items that will be sealed away, though, are the VNSNY anniversary banners that hundreds of staff members signed during our 125th anniversary breakfast back on October 25th. “My thanks to everyone at VNSNY who provided such wonderful ideas on what to place in our time capsule,” notes Marki Flannery, VNSNY’s President and CEO.

It’s Official! November 1st Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Marks the Completion of VNSNY’s Move to 220 East 42nd Street

November 4, 2018–On November 1st, following a group count-down, President and CEO Marki Flannery and Board Chair John Rafferty officially cut the ribbon on VNSNY’s new 220 East 42nd Street office. The organization’s move into the new space had been completed just three days earlier, when the last wave of Manhattan staff members from Partners in Care made the transition from 1250 Broadway. “This very same building was once the home of the Daily Planet newspaper in the Superman movies,” said Marki, as she addressed the group of employees and outside consultants who had gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “I think that’s very appropriate, because our move into this location would not have been possible without the amazing efforts of our own group of Supermen and Superwomen!” Marki went on to thank the many individuals and departments who contributed to the remarkably seamless process, concluding with special thanks to the hundreds of staff members

Swish! Strike! Raising Funds for VNSNY’s Employee Giving Campaign

November 1, 2018–On Friday, October 19th, VNSNY’s “Strength from Within” Employee Giving Campaign arrived at the former Manhattan offices of Partners in Care with a swish and a clatter, as a pair of portable basketball and bowling games made the rounds of the 9th and 10th floors at 1250 Broadway. For 50 cents a try, staff members could compete on behalf of their departments, with the winning department getting to select which VNSNY program would receive the day’s contributions. “It was a lot of fun, and the funds went to some great programs in support of patients,” says Dana Edwards, Associate Director of Partners in Care, who managed the road show together with Client Services Coordinator Venessa Shorte. “Some staff even grabbed pom poms and cheered their team members on! We had a number of employees from our recently acquired Prestige Care and All Season Licensed Home Care Service Agencies participating as well,

October 28, 2018–Here they are: Photos of VNSNY’s 125th Birthday Party! From the five boroughs of New York City to Nassau and Westchester, VNSNY employees gathered last Thursday morning to celebrate VNSNY’s 125th anniversary. The October 25th breakfast event unfolded at 13 different sites across VNSNY’s service area at exactly the same time. Surrounded by balloons and other festive birthday decorations, staff members enjoyed a Continental breakfast, signed VNSNY banners to be placed in time capsules at Columbia University until VNSNY’s bicentennial in 2093, and viewed a special 125th anniversary video. Everyone also received take-home gifts to commemorate the occasion, including branded VNSNY umbrellas and chocolates with 125th Anniversary greetings on the wrapper. Here is a slide show of birthday celebration photos from all 13 sites!

VNSNY’s 2018-2019 ACE Leadership Program Kicks Off in Style

October 26, 2018–The 28 participating staff members in this year’s VNSNY ACE (Achieving a Culture of Excellence) Leadership Program gathered on Wednesday, October 17 for the program’s official kick-off. The hour-long event was also attended by more than 40 senior leaders, participants’ supervisors, and ACE alumni. President and CEO Marki Flannery, SVP and Chief Human Resources Officer Marian Haas, and VP of Talent Management & Organizational Development Andrew Wise each addressed the audience, explaining the program’s role in developing and refining leadership skills, and encouraging the group to take full advantage of the opportunity for growth that ACE presents. The program participants are selected based on criteria such as job performance, leadership potential, and a desire to grow within the organization. “In this 125th anniversary year, the ACE program really embodies VNSNY’s DNA,” Andrew notes. “It’s about going above and beyond, fostering individual and team growth, and building connections and collaboration within the VNSNY community.” “The

VNSNY’s Board Supports Strategic Plan; Implementation Is Now Underway

October 18, 2018–Earlier this month, the VNSNY Board of Directors formally provided support for the second phase of VNSNY’s strategic planning process. “This is an important milestone,” says Marki Flannery, VNSNY’s President and CEO. “We are now working with teams across the entire enterprise to refine the tactics and measurements of our plan so that we can prepare a high-level, three-year financial forecast for our business.” This next body of work builds on VNSNY’s strategic framework (outlined in VNSNY Strategy Video Part 1) and the strategic workshops held this summer (highlighted in VNSNY Strategy Video #2). During those workshops, employees from across VNSNY came together to help shape the strategies for each of the framework’s seven goals and to start the work of identifying what needs to be done to achieve each goal. A progress report on that work was shared earlier this month in two meetings with management staff. Here are
