Do You Have a Favorite Family Recipe that Represents Your Unique Cultural Heritage?

October 4, 2021

Announcing the VNSNY Multicultural Cookbook!

There’s something delicious (and fun) cooking up at the Anti-Racism Council (ARC): a cookbook celebrating delicious foods from across New York City’s many different cultures—featuring recipes submitted by VNSNY staff. ARC is especially interested in hearing about any healthy recipes in your family’s recipe collection.

The brainchild of the Anti-Racism Council’s Celebration Committee, the cookbook will ultimately be a digital holiday gift from the ARC to VNSNY staff. “This seemed like a perfect, all-inclusive way to engage all the employees, and to celebrate the multitude of different cultures represented at VNSNY,” says Melissa Henry, Community Relations Manager, who’s spearheading the project together with Veronica Torres, Community Relations Coordinator, Government Affairs, and Alyson Roberts, Manager, IT Care Management Products.

The cookbook idea was sparked by a favorite childhood memory of Alyson’s. “When I was in school, we used to have multicultural days, when all the kids came in with traditional costumes and foods from their family heritage or homeland, and it was always such a celebration, because who doesn’t love food? We can’t gather together yet because of COVID, but this is a way to bring us together in a festive and fun way,” says Alyson. “ARC deals with a lot of heavy and important issues, but it’s important that there be a joyous side to celebrating diversity and learning about different cultures. Even if you’re not a cook, just learning about a dish might inspire you to try it out the next time you see it on the menu at a restaurant.”

Share Your Favorite Family Dish!

Whether it’s your grandmother’s traditional holiday dinner, a tasty side salad, a treat unique to your national heritage, or anything delicious from any corner of the world, ARC would love to include it. The healthier the recipe, the better, but all food categories are welcome and encouraged! What’s more, the cookbook will also include photos, personal back stories, and other fun details about each recipe. Our easy submission form (see below) will walk you through the process. All recipes must be submitted before the end of October.
